Football Fever Strikes

With Spain’s epic World Cup win against Netherlands, a friend of mine organized a game of football one Sunday afternoon.

Most of those who came loves the sport but have not been regularly playing due to various reasons. I for one simply can’t find time, playmates and a pitch. I used to go to CSA, Ateneo, UP and Don Bosco Makati every Sundays to play with whoever is on the field.

Since football isn’t a national pastime it took an effort to get a game going. First you need players. Whether playing a 3, 5, 7 or 11 a side, numbers matter. Then you need a decent pitch to play in. The best ones are in international schools and private schools. Then you have to have the boots or spikes. Playing on soft soil or mud can get you injured if you don’t have enough traction.

Had our conquistador friends from Spain not lost the Philippines to the Americans, we would have still been raving about football instead of the tall man’s game, basketball. Filipinos are agile, quick, diligent team players. We can excel in this sport. We should promote and develop it.

I used to run to build stamina for football. But now I train for running races and marathons.

It was a fun afternoon with the rain. Although the field we played on was a bit soft with sinkholes so there was a high risk of sprains. I’m looking forward to the next weekend. I’m just happy to be back in the pitch again.

…he dribbles…he scores! GOOOOAAALL!!!

I scored a hat trick in one of our 7-a-side and two goals in a game before that. Orgasmic!

If anybody wants to play with us you will be most welcome. The more the merrier!

  1. I do agree. Some of the football players are not that tall. You just need speed, a pair of good legs and will to compete in this game.

  2. You need skills too 🙂 Running with the ball, dribbling, passing, headers… On top of that you gotta have good teammates.
